Former U of L players helping with Lorenzen’s funeral costs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – Three former University of Louisville football players are putting rivalry aside and helping to pay for the funeral of former Kentucky football quarterback Jared Lorenzen.

Former U of L offensive lineman Jamon Brown, who like Lorenzen played for the New York Giants in the NFL, is donating $5,000 through his foundation. Two other former Cardinals, Deion Branch and Chris Redman, are also donating an unspecified amount toward the funeral cost.

"We wanted to be an example of how, no matter if you played for the blue or the red, how important it is for us to come together and support one another, both in and out of sports,” Brown told Forbes.com. "The rivalry between the schools is intense, and it’s great, but at the end of the day, all that doesn’t matter. What matters is that you remember that we’re all in this game of life together, whether you played for the blue or the red."

Lorenzen, who had a legendary career at UK and still holds several passing records, died Wednesday at the age of 38 after being hospitalized with an infection, heart and kidney issues.

A celebration of Jared's life will be on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a Christian burial service following at 6 p.m. at St. Pius X Church in Edgewood, Ky.
