Giving Tuesday: Make a difference in a child's life through Sunrise

Posted

Do you know that in just a few short days, you will have a unique opportunity to make a significant difference in the life of a child in Kentucky? And not just you. All of us.

On Nov. 27, people from all over the globe will come together for GIVING TUESDAY, a day to give back to the community and support important causes. On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, I will be giving to a ministry near and dear to my heart: Sunrise Children’s Services. Will you give with me?

You see, we can accomplish so much more together than we can alone. If just half of the Kentucky Today readership, which is about 250,000 individuals, gave $10 each to Sunrise on GIVING TUESDAY, we could raise 2.5 million dollars. A gift of $25 would achieve over six million dollars. I know. That’s quite a miraculous number. Some would even call it an impossible dream. But if we are to touch as many orphans as possible, I believe we need God-sized dreams. And I have seen miracles occur in kids and families across this state.

Unfortunately, statistics paint a gloomy picture for Kentucky children. Our commonwealth has the nation’s second-highest rate of child abuse and neglect. More than 9,800 youth are currently in custody of the state because they’ve been removed from their homes to keep them safe and protected. And this number is rising every month.

For almost 150 years, Sunrise has responded to the need. Currently, Sunrise provides six therapeutic residential treatment centers, therapeutic foster care and foster-to-adopt, professional care to families in crisis, and a proven transition program for those who have aged out of the foster care system. We serve hurting children, youth, and families all across this state, from Paducah to Pikeville.

But we can’t do it alone. Five years ago, Sunrise served about 425 children and family members in Kentucky. Today, Sunrise’s census has grown to more than 1,300 individuals statewide – the highest in the organization’s history.

That’s why Nov. 27 is so important to me. That’s why I’m seeking a miracle for Kentucky kids on GIVING TUESDAY. That’s why I’m expecting the impossible, the God-sized dreams that move the needle. Kentucky families need it. And they need it now. If all of us can give just a little, the impossible will become the possible, and miracles will happen. You can help us provide therapy, food, clothing, activities, clinical intervention, and more to children and family members in need. And, you can help us give each child a new start and a path to success if they accept it. Here’s how:

If we had 250,000 individuals give $10 or $25 for this campaign, this would be an absolute outpouring of hope. You can give online at sunrise.org/GivingTuesday. You will also find resources to share our campaign on social media. Plus, we have already secured matching donations from generous donors, up to $20,000. On November 27, your gift of $10 instantly becomes $20. Your gift of $25 becomes $50. One hundred dollars becomes $200!

One day can truly make a difference for Kentucky families. Will you join me in making this happen? Will you help make this year’s GIVING TUESDAY a day to remember for Sunrise kids and families? Let’s make a difference together on Nov. 27.
