Pastors inspired to 'reset' church evangelism strategy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – Church leaders from Paducah to Pikeville said they were inspired to be more intentional about sharing the gospel after attending conferences led by longtime evangelist Don McCutcheon.

McCutcheon, former evangelism director with the Florida and North Carolina Baptist conventions, said introducing people to Jesus isn’t complicated. Instead, he said, it should come naturally to every believer.

“Evangelism is simply one person telling another person about the greatest person – Jesus Christ,” McCutcheon told pastors.

More than 150 pastors registered for RESET Evangelism Strategy Training presented by the Kentucky Baptist Convention in Louisville, Ky.

“Reset was well received for being a first-time statewide event,” said Todd Gray, head of Kentucky Baptist Convention’s Evangelism & Church Planting team. “Leaders who attended expressed their strong appreciation, and left with plans to implement specific actions to help them reach more people for Christ.”

Gray said RESET was unique in that it did not promote a specific evangelism tool, such as 3 Circles or Vacation Bible school, but instead helped leaders think about their entire strategy for reaching people with the gospel.

“Churches will drift into fellowship but must be led into evangelism,” said attendee Tim Beougher, associate dean of the Billy Graham School of Missions, Evangelism and Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville.

Gray said plans are in the works for RESET 2018 and will feature Matt Queen, author and associate dean of evangelism at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Queen serves as the L.R. Scarborough Chair of Evangelism at the Fort Worth seminary, a position known as the “Chair of Fire.”

The one-day RESET training events are aimed at pastors, church planters, directors of missions, student ministers and key leaders to help them think strategically about leading the church in a comprehensive plan for reaching people.

“I thought one pastor summed up our intent when he said, ‘I have received an evangelism reset,’” Gray said.
