State college roundup: EKU holds off Jacksonville State in OT

RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) — Dujuanta Weaver nailed a 3-point jumper to open the extra period and Eastern Kentucky made six free throws to secure a 70-65 overtime victory over Jacksonville on Saturday night.

 

Weaver took just three shots all night, but made the one that gave Eastern Kentucky (4-4) the lead for good.

 

Jacksonville (3-6) was trailing 59-57 in the last minute of regulation when Jace Hogan missed two straight shots but then grabbed his own rebound and put it in with 19 seconds remaining to send it to overtime. Asante Gist missed a layup on the other end as time expired.

 

Eastern Kentucky trailed 31-29 at the half. The Colonels appeared to be dominating the second period and they led 57-48 with 3:47 remaining. Hogan, who totaled 20 points, scored eight after that as Eastern Kentucky went cold.

 

Nick Mayo led the Colonels with 22 points and 12 rebounds. DeAndre Dishman had 11 points with 12 rebounds.

 

Western Kentucky 78, Wright State 60

 

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Darius Thompson scored 18 points, and Justin Johnson added 13 points and 12 rebounds to lead Western Kentucky to a 78-60 victory over Wright State on Saturday.

 

Thompson was 6 of 10 from the floor and made three 3-pointers, and Johnson was 5-of-11 shooting from the field. Lamonte Bearden chipped in 15 points for Western Kentucky (6-2), which shot 28 of 54 (52 percent) from the floor. 

 

Taveion Hollingsworth added 13 points and Dwight Coleby had 10 for the Hilltoppers.

 

Grant Benzinger scored 19 points to lead Wright State (4-4). Loudon Love and Jaylon Hall finished with 11 points apiece.

 

Benzinger hit a 3-pointer to give Wright State its last lead, 23-22 with 7:11 remaining in the first half. The Hilltoppers closed the half on a 19-7 run for a 41-30 halftime lead, and stretched it to 20 points midway through the second half.

 

Northern Kentucky 86, Morehead State 49

 

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (AP) — Drew McDonald scored 22 points with five 3-pointers, Lavone Holland II added 16 points, and Northern Kentucky used a 25-3 second-half run to pull away from Morehead State 86-49 on Saturday night.

 

Carson Williams had 13 points, Jeff Garrett added 10 with seven boards, and Jalen Tate had 10 points and three steals for the Norse (6-2). Northern Kentucky made 12 3-pointers and shot 59.3 percent from the floor.

 

McDonald hit back-to-back 3-pointers, a layup and another 3 for his 1,000th career point and the Norse led 49-28 early in the second half. Williams scored all of his points in a 25-3 run capped by Mason Faulkner's consecutive 3s and Northern Kentucky led by 37.

 

Jeff Garrett's layup sparked a 14-0 run capped by Holland's 3-pointer and the Norse led 23-10 while the Eagles were scoreless for nearly four minutes. McDonald scored 11 in the half, Holland had 10 and the Norse led 38-28.

 

Djimon Henson scored 15 points, reaching double figures for the seventh straight game for the Eagles (2-6).
