State Senate sets new committee chairs, vice-chairs

FRANKFORT, Ky.  (KT) - State Senate Republicans announced new committee chairs and vice-chairs Monday in preparation for the 2018 General Assembly, or any special sessions, prior to Jan. 2.

Sen. Max Wise, R-Campbellsville, has been named chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Education.  Former chairman, Sen.  Mike Wilson, R-Bowling Green, gave up the post when he was elected Majority Caucus Whip earlier this year. Sen. Steve West, R-Paris, has assumed Senator Wise’s previous role as the vice-chairman of the Education Committee.

“We are fortunate in the Senate Majority Caucus to have such a deep bench of competent legislators to step up and take on new challenges for the Commonwealth of Kentucky,” said Senate President Robert Stiver, R-Manchester.  “I am certain that each new chairman and vice-chairman possesses the skills and work ethic to lead their committees effectively.”

With Wise chairing the Education Committee, Sen. Steve Meredith, R-Leitchfield, is now co-chair of the Government Contract Review Committee, while Sen. Wil Schroder, R-Wilder, is the new chairman of the Enrollment Committee. Sen. Rick Girdler, R-Somerset, was named vice-chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Economic Development, Tourism, and Labor.

The Senate Committee on Committees will officially confirm these new chairmanships upon the next time the Senate convenes.
