FLATWOODS, Ky. (KT) – A police chase in northeastern Kentucky on Thursday night ended with officers fatally shooting an Ohio man and woman.
Kiser L. Sturgell, 27, of Jackson, Ohio and Ashley Jenkins, 23, of Lucasville, Ohio were pronounced dead by the Greenup County Coroner’s Office. They were killed in normally quiet Flatwoods, Kentucky, in a shootout after the chase around 11 p.m.
Neighbors in the area say they heard about 20 gunshots ring out, according to a media report.
Kentucky State Police Post 14 launched an investigation into the case late Thursday night. KSP released some details through a press release Friday evening.
KSP learned law enforcement in Ohio had contacted Greenup County 911 and alerted them of an attempt to locate Sturgell and Jenkins. The Ross County, Ohio, Sheriff’s Office had been seeking Sturgell since Wednesday.
The sheriff’s department and U.S. Marshals Service attempted to serve a warrant on Sturgell at a residence in southern Ross County, but he fled into nearby woods with a rifle, and later stole a 1997 burgundy Buick at gunpoint, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities in Greenup County were informed Sturgell and Jenkins may be in the Flatwoods area on Thursday evening.
Local police officers located the stolen vehicle and chased it across multiple roads before the pursuit ended in the area of Ky. Rts. 693 and 207, a largely residential section of town.
Officers from the Flatwoods Police Department, Bellefonte Police Department and Russell Police Departments approached the vehicle, KSP said in the release. A threat was presented and officers responded by firing shots into the vehicle, according to KSP.
A rifle was found in Sturgell’s possession, according to KSP.
Both Sturgell and Jenkins were pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsies are scheduled for both at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort.
