Baptist youth choir to share the gospel from elite stage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (KT) – The Kentucky Baptist Convention All-State Youth Choir and Orchestra was bestowed a huge honor to sing on a stage reserved for only the elite.

About 75 young musicians representing churches across Kentucky will participate in the 2018 American Choral Directors Association’s southern division conference when it is held in Feb. 21-24 at the Galt House in Louisville, Ky.

The Kentucky Baptist youth choir was one of 19 choirs selected. Eighty-five choirs from Alabama, Florida
Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia auditioned for a coveted spot.

“It’s a miracle that we got an invitation to sing,” said Kentucky Baptist Convention Worship and Music Consultant Jason Stewart. “We were competing against choirs that sing together every day throughout the school year.”
Stewart said the youth choir meets once each summer for a week of rehearsals, making their selection even more extraordinary.

“What we were able to accomplish in the three and a half days of rehearsal is amazing,” Stewart said. “Together with the fact that it’s our 30th anniversary, is a great reason to celebrate.”

While the students in the All-State Youth Choir and Orchestra are gifted, Stewart said they recognize the gift comes from God. Their time together is spent centered in Christ, with their music as well as devotions and small-group sessions.

“It’s an opportunity that God has given us to use music to share the gospel story,” Stewart said.

That is a sentiment echoed by All-State Youth Choir Conductor Mickey Ballard.

“It is my firm belief that our musical selections should proclaim the Gospel of Jesus
Christ, create a soundtrack for our students’ lives, and serve the dual purpose of edifying the body and promoting evangelism,” said Ballard. “The repertoire we propose for this performance points directly to the sacrificial atonement of Christ, his humility in sacrifice, and our response in praise.”

Ballard said the All-State Youth Choir is looking to the future by seeking new members and encouraged talented high school students to audition. Prospective choir members should be active in a Kentucky Baptist church and be active in their church’s youth choir if there is one. More information, check out www.kybaptist.org/asyco.
