ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (KT) – Clarity Solutions has been faithfully serving pregnant and post-abortive women for two decades. Now, the pregnancy resource center is adding a maternity house to their long list of services.
“Clarity already had robust medical services and an ongoing program for women to receive education, mentoring and material resources,” said Laura Dickinson, executive director of Clarity. “But over these last 20 years, we realized that so many women needed even more support. It takes time and a depth of relationship to be able to break generational cycles and facilitate true transformation in Jesus.”
Clarity staff had been seeing more and more women in unstable housing situations—homeless and living out of cars, couch surfing at friends’ apartments or previously living with a partner who kicked her out when he realized she was pregnant. And there were few local options in Hardin County that could house pregnant women.
“There’s maternity housing in Louisville, which is the closest one we’d refer to, and for a lot of our girls who come from a background of poverty, going to Louisville may as well have been going to the moon,” Dickinson explained.
A local maternity home can alleviate the strain and distress many pregnant women have experienced with housing instability.
“Being pregnant is already a vulnerable time and not knowing where you're going to sleep tonight can add to the stress and anxiety,” Dickinson added. “We desire to be a safe and stable place where women can be pregnant and can have their baby, where they can learn about the love of Jesus and new ways of living.”
The maternity home, aptly named “The Haven at Clarity,” will be a space where staff can love and serve pregnant women outside of traditional business hours—and Clarity’s designated case manager will work with the women towards self-sufficiency while they are in the program.
“We truly hope that these residents will be able to experience the love of Jesus that will, in turn, allow her to come to know Him,” Dickinson said. “We also hope that the circumstances that brought her to us will be alleviated during her time with us; she’ll be able to parent her child or choose the option of adoption in a safe and loving environment.”
The Haven at Clarity was unveiled during the pregnancy center’s 20th-anniversary open house celebration on July 25. Renovations are scheduled to be completed in the fall, with an anticipated start date in early 2022. It will be able to house up to four women from the time an expectant mom confirms her pregnancy until her child is 18 months old.
